Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
After two decades in Hospitality, and then pivoting into cruise sales (which the pandemic abruptly ended) I acted on my intention to try my hand at Recruitment. Fortunately, my Hospitality career in Front Office management meant I was very close to the hiring process and had a say in numerous aspects of talent attraction.
This gave me very solid grounding in assessing and selecting the best addition to the team I was managing at the time. Sales experience has also been of great value for my career as a Recruiter as we rely on numerous aspects of the sales process. From lead generation and picking up the phone to start the relationship, all the way through to objection handling and selling he best parts of a candidate, all adds value to Recruitment!
Since starting out in January 2022, I can’t quite believe that I’m coming up to two full years in a career that can be brutal, rewarding, conflicting, enjoyable and challenging! So many emotions cross the desk of a recruiter, and it is those champagne and razor blade days that keep me on my toes. The disappointment of a letdown is always buoyed by that dopamine hit of a win, however small. I feel hopeful, dedicated and increasingly pleased with the connections I make, networking I do, and how that translates to consistent results.
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
I’m no futurist and would love a crystal ball or some other such mechanism to foretell the future! I can think of no more powerful tool to any recruiter…For me, I do all I can to live in that ever elusive now moment. There is a lot of power in the now and I prefer to focus on that, add value to it and influence the outcome we (Client / Candidate / Consultant) want. Having said that, I feel that the market will still be very dynamic for quite some time. Quite certainly remote work is here to stay. Another integral part of our lives is the pace and scale of technology integration. We will see further inroads into how AI and automation will increasingly affect the recruitment process. Remember always that it is our empathy and humanity that is key. Flex those muscles daily and the return on investment will always keep your cup full!
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
I think best thing to advise any employer is to be deeply aware of the candidate experience. Candidates who enjoy a positive experience may become brand advocates and the best ambassador for the company. Stuff your recruiter around as we have thick-skin and resilience for that. Value your candidates, as they are the next generation of colleagues!
